The Nevada Cub’s JV wrestlers showed a lot of growth in the North Polk Tournament that was held on Saturday, December 15. The teams that were at this tournament were Adel, Ames, Boone, BCLUW, Carlisle, Clarke, Colfax-Mingo, Collins-Maxwell, Forest City, Hudson, Marshalltown, Newton, North Polk, Perry, Pleasantville, Saydel, and West Marshall.

In the 106 pounds weight class, Zach Stinn competed in five rounds. In round one, Zach put up a tough battle, but lost by fall to Marshalltown’s Hunter Baccam. In the second round, Zach had tremendous effort and won by fall to Jake Uhlman of Carlisle. In the third round, Landus McManus of Ames won by decision over Zach, and in the fourth match Zach had a bye. In Zach’s final match, he left everything out there and got the win by fall over Bway Htoo of Marshalltown. Zach had a tremendous night, finishing third in his weight class.

The next wrestler was Benton Shill, who was wrestling at 120 pounds. In the first round, Hector De La Cruz of Marshalltown won by fall over Benton. In the second round, Quinton Kimrey of Adel won by fall over Benton. In the final round Damien Bayles of Newton won by fall. With Benton putting in a solid effort for all of his matches, he finished 4th in his weight class

“Benton Shill came off a good night of wrestling at the IFA JV Tournament Friday night, but he faced a tough bracket on Saturday,” said Coach Larry Stufflebeam. “He continues to look for ways to improve during each match.”

Theo Skelton was in the 145 pounds class in the tournament. In the first round, Sean Golwitzer of North Polk won by fall over Theo. The next round Theo lost by fall to Alex Morrison of Adel. In the final match Theo pulled out the win over Luke Coulter of West Marshall. Theo placed 3rd overall in his weight class.

“Theo continues to show improvement. He finishes a match knowing what he did wrong and how to fix it for the next match,” said Coach Stufflebeam.

Carlos Buenrrostro also wrestled in the 145 weight class. The first match Carlos won by fall over Ethan Schlichte of Carlisle. In the next match Adam Trunkhill of Forest City won by fall over Carlos. In the final match-up, Carlos won by fall over Hunter Williams of Boone. Carlos finished second overall in his weight class and put on a strong performance winning two out of three matches.

In the 220 pound weight class was Holden Fry. In the first two matches, Holden Fry won by fall over Aiden Farnsworth of BCLUW and Sebastian Hernandez of Perry. In the last round, Holden lost to a really tough Tyson Elliott of Newton. Holden was second in his weight class in the tournament.

In the heavyweight class, Luke Schmitz placed first. He wrestled and took down Will Thornton of Colfax-Mingo, Zach Darr of Perry, Tanner Murray of Carlisle, and Exvavion Chairse of Ames. He won all of his matches by fall.

“Luke Schmitz continues to wrestle well as he won his bracket,” said Coach Stufflebeam. “Pinning his opponent in the first 13 seconds of Round 4 was a highlight for Luke.”

For some of the kids, this is their first year wrestling in high school, and they keep on improving every match. For the first time the staff is using Matboss, which is a video stat app to record the matches.

“Many of the wrestlers take advantage of this in order to see what they are doing and find where they made a mistake. They can see how to fix the mistake in order to improve for the next match,” said Coach Stufflebeam.

With the conclusion of this tournament, the Cubs look to take these awesome performances to Ogden for the next tournament on January 5th.
