The JV Gold girls basketball team made a late surge, but lost a close one in Friday night’s game against South Hamilton. The final score was 28-37.

“The girls came out a little flat in the first three quarters of the game. This was partly due to this group not playing or practicing yet together,” said Coach Scott Uthe. “So we all weren’t sure how all our pieces would fit together.”

The first quarter started off with the girls down by nine with a score of 4-13, and then in the second quarter the Cubs were still down 10-23. In the second half, however, the Cubs switched up their defense to a press, which made it easier for them to get turnovers and get back into the game. At the end of the third quarter, the score was 13-28.

In the fourth quarter many girls stepped up.

“The whole fourth quarter was a momentum swing for our girls,” said Coach Uthe. “We scored 13 points through the first three quarters and then came out and scored 15 in the fourth.”

Leading the charge in the fourth quarter was Eleanor Elliot-Rude, who had seven points in the final quarter of play. Other top scorers were Hannah Waldera with five, and Kayla Dunson and Ella Higgins with four each.

Despite Nevada having a late momentum surge, they couldn’t make up the deficit and lost, 28-37.

That moves the team to 4-1 overall on their season and 1-1 in conference play. The 9th grade girls look to continue conference play on Friday night against PCM at home.
