On Saturday, November 17, the Nevada girls varsity basketball competed in their season opener with a new coach, Jordan Bentley. Coach Bentley moved to State Center this summer from Washington, Iowa with his wife. Bentley was a girls basketball head coach for three years in Washington, and this is his tenth year of coaching.

The girls lost a hard fought game against Carlisle 53-55.

Coach Bentley said, “The girls did a nice job of moving the basketball to get open shots.”

The Cubs put the pressure on Carlisle and caused them to turn over the ball in the first half. The Cubs led at half 39-21. In the second half, the Cubs had a hard time controlling the ball, giving Carlisle multiple chances to score.

The game was tied with seven seconds to go when Carlisle got a steal and passed the ball all the way down the court for the game winning layup.

Coach Bentley said, “The girls worked very hard and it was tough to lose the game in the end.”

Addi Vorm led the Cubs in scoring with 15 points, followed by Kacie Rewerts with 13 points.

The Cubs will continue to practice their defense pressure and taking care of the ball. Coach Bentley said he is very excited for the rest of the season with a great group of hard-working kids.

The Cubs play at home against Grundy Center on Monday, November 26.
