The JV girls’ basketball team traveled to Grundy Center Tuesday, February 6. The girls played hard and came back from behind, but came up short. The Cubs fell to the Spartans 25-19.
The Cubs started off slow, being down 12-1 at the end of the first. The Cubs played great defense in the second quarter, though, and held the Spartans to two points. By the end of the third quarter, the game was tied at 16. Grundy Center took the lead again 21-17, but the Cubs closed it to 21-19 with the ball. With 1:45 left, there were two costly turnovers that led to breakaway layups for Grundy Center who was able to pull away with the win.
“I was proud of how hard the girls climbed back into the game to tie it at 16. I challenged them on the defensive end to lock down as we were getting beat off the ball on cuts. I went to a 1-2-2 zone and that forced turnovers,” said Coach Mark Hersom.
Sophomore guard Megan Wessels led the team with six points, and sophomore guard Meredith Harter followed with four. Freshman post Sydney Mosinski added three points, and junior Rylee Stevenson and sophomore Erica Sporrer each had two points.
Coach Hersom said, “This team played well defensively all year and can build on that. Three of our losses came down the the final minute.”
The JV girls’ basketball team ended their season 15-6.
